Today we presented our research on Ireland in the 1930s. It’s pretty similar to what New York was like but there was no glamour out in rural Ireland. The only entertainment was radio.
After we presented our research, we went to see The Hour of Feeling. I really liked the show, and it was great to go and support Maddie.

Today we performed stage door. I thought the beginning went pretty well but I messed up one of my lines and lost my rhythm. During our scene by the piano, Jackie stayed by me a little longer than normal and that made the scene a little more exciting. She kept touching my shoulder and getting in my face and I was getting really annoyed with her. I think everyone did a really great job, it was fun!
After we did a few notes we started asking Scott questions about the real world. It was nice to get information from him because you know he won’t try to soften things just to spare our feelings. He also went around the room and talked about everyone’s type which was nice. I’ve never really had anyone tell me what type I am. I wasn’t really surprised by what he said but it was still nice to hear it.

Today we wore costumes for the first time. Before we ran through the scene, we did a viewpoints exercise as our characters in the space. I found out the reason I don’t like Keith is because he is taking Terry away from me. She doesn’t have time to hang out with me anymore. I don’t have a very strong connection with any of the other girls in the house, though. Just like Terry, I feel somewhat maternal towards Kaye; I think that’s because I’ve seen Terry worry about her.
Costumes changed the run through completely. It helped me with distinguishing between my two characters. Judith is a lot more feminine than Olga but she can still take care of herself. It was fun being able to use the costumes and props to my advantage.

Today, we had to be off book! Honestly, I completely forgot about it but I knew more of the lines than I thought I did. It wasn’t as much of a fiasco as I thought it’d be. Scott told Jackie and I that our Olga and Bernice scene was boring. I need to show my dislike towards her more. Scott also told me that I should use the piano to show how annoyed I am with her and that worked pretty well. I think we were both thinking about our lines too much.

Last night was opening night of my show! I’m very happy with how it went but sad at the same time because it’ll be over soon. :(
In class today we did some more viewpoints and did a run through. It went pretty well, we just had to fix up some of the transitions. I’ve been working on my Olga accent and I’ve got everything down except for “certainly”. I just sound like I’ve got a frog in my throat or something.

Today, we finished blocking the scene and went through it. We didn’t do a smooth run through because we stopped to fix some things. I’m really excited to perform this in a couple weeks!
Scott went around the room and asked us all sorts of background on our characters. I decided that Judith was from somewhere around Philadelphia. Scott, of course, told me to be more specific and I spent the rest of the class period figuring that out. Judith is from Manayunk, Philadelphia. Her family is Irish Catholic and her dad and brothers (2, older) work for a textile company in town.
The show she is currently in is not on broadway, nor is it the biggest role she has gotten. Judith has been in three shows on broadway and the biggest role she played was second lead.

We started with a little viewpoints today and then went on to blocking! I’m the kind of person that takes notes on every little thing I’m directed to do. It’s kind of hard for me to just jump up and do something; I like structure. That being said, I snapped a little at Scott when we started. I did get the hang of it though and felt better about everything. I need to get used to the idea that each director will have a different directing style. The class ended before the second little scene I’m in.

Today we did viewpoints for the first time in a long time! I didn’t realize how much I missed it until we came back to it. I really enjoy doing viewpoints with everyone. It’s always a really interesting experience and I trust them all so I’m not inhibited.
We also did another read through today. Blocking starts Wednesday!

Today we presented our dramaturgy for Stage Door. I thought everyone had a lot of interesting stuff to say. I love the 30s so it was nice to learn more about it.
I thought the first read through went well. I’m really excited to give Judith more of a back story. From what I remember about her character description, it’s not as specific as Olga’s. I’ll have to go back and take a look at it. I’m toying with making her from the midwest just so I can do another funny accent but I may make her a New Yorker.
